The line, station by station
The Marston Vale line runs between Bedford and Bletchley across the clay vale, and it has done since long before anyone proposed a theme park on it. Its stations, running from the Bedford end, are Bedford St Johns, Kempston Hardwick, Stewartby, Millbrook, Lidlington, Ridgmont, Aspley Guise, Woburn Sands, Bow Brickhill, Fenny Stratford and Bletchley.
Kempston Hardwick and Millbrook are request stops — you signal to the driver to stop, rather than the train calling automatically.
The line exists because of the brickworks. It served the clay pits and the works that occupied this land for most of the twentieth century, which is why it happens to run directly past the site of a resort being built on those same brickfields.
Worth knowing. Bedford St Johns is a short walk from Bedford town centre and from the Cauldwell area, which makes the southern side of Bedford genuinely commutable to the site without a car.
Why this is the value play for renters
Almost everyone searching for a room will type the name of a town. That means Bedford, Kempston, and eventually Ampthill and Milton Keynes. Very few people will think to search along a railway line.
The result is that Stewartby, Lidlington and Ridgmont — villages with their own stations, one or two stops from the site — stay priced as remote countryside rather than as site-adjacent accommodation. Stewartby in particular is about a mile and a half from the site and has a station.
If you do not have a car, or would rather not run one, this line is the single most useful piece of information on this website.
The honest caveats
This is a rural single-track line with a modest service frequency, and it has had a genuinely difficult few years operationally, including extended periods where trains were replaced by buses.
It is also directly affected by East West Rail, the project reconnecting Oxford and Cambridge, which uses the Bletchley to Bedford corridor. Long term that should mean a significantly better railway. Short term, major engineering work on a route you depend on daily is a real consideration.
None of that changes the geography — the station is where it is, next to the site. But do not sign a twelve-month agreement in Ridgmont on the assumption of a turn-up-and-go service without checking what is actually running.
Worth knowing. Check live service patterns with National Rail or the operator before committing to a room on the basis of this line. Do not rely on this page, or any page, for a timetable.
Where to look, in order
If you want a car-free commute to the site, the shortlist in rough order of proximity is Stewartby, Millbrook, Lidlington, the Cauldwell and Bedford St Johns side of Bedford, then Ridgmont, Aspley Guise and Woburn Sands, with Bletchley at the far end offering by far the deepest supply of affordable shared housing.
Bletchley deserves particular attention. It is the western terminus, so there is a direct train the whole way, and as part of Milton Keynes it has a large and comparatively cheap room market. The journey is long, but it is a train journey rather than a drive, and Milton Keynes is explicitly inside Universal's local hiring area.
